Caribbean Beaches

At Andes World Travel we are very excited to introduce you to the ruggedly spectacular and relatively undiscovered Caribbean Coast. The coastline is over 1800 km long and is home to the country’s best beaches.

We believe there is the right beach for everyone, no matter if you prefer the rarely visited Punta Gallinas with its massive dunes, the archipelago of Providencia with isolated beaches, unspoiled coral reefs or the luxury of the Tayronas Ecohabs.

These are just some of our Colombian beach favorites: Tayrona Natural Park, Sanguare, Providencia and Guajira Desert.

Tayrona Natural Park

COL-58 / 4-day Trip

Caribbean Beaches 1
OVERVIEW

“Ecohabs” is the new term for eco-lodges and resorts along the beautiful beaches and mountains of Santa Marta, Colombia. Staying in an ecohab is a perfect getaway option to reconnect with nature. Take a long walk down the coast, learn about organic farming, read a book while overlooking the rich forest landscape, or take a nature tour of Tayrona National Park.

We recommend avoiding visiting the Ecohabs around Christmas – New Years Eve, Eastern Week and National Holidays due to the crowds.

Important: The park closes once a year around the month of February, due to Indigenous religious ceremonies. If you are planning your trip around this time of the year, please contact us to confirm the exact restricted dates.

Sanguare

COL-55 / 4-day Trip

COL-55 / Caribbean Beach & Natural Reserve – Sanguaré / Sanguare Beach Lodge
OVERVIEW

Sanguare is a natural reserve in Golfo de Morrosquillo located on the oceanfront. Due to its remote location, a 3-hour drive from Cartagena, the floury sand and pristine beach, the excellent food and great installations, Sanguare is close to being a perfect beach lodge.

But this is more than just a beach lodge: It’s also dedicated to preserving and recuperating the dry forest and the natural habitats. During a stay at Sanguare you can spend time on the beach, visit the mangroves by kayac and do some hiking in the dry forest. Biking and bird watching is also an option. One of the greatest highlights at Sanguare is the boat trip to the San Bernado Islands and the tour to the bioluminescent plankton.

Day 1 Cartagena – Sanguaré
Day 2 Sanguaré
Day 3 Sanguaré
Day 4 Sanguaré – Cartagena
ITINERARY
Day 1

Cartagena – Sanguaré
Private transfer from Cartagena to Sanguaré (approx. 3 hours). During rainy times transfer by boat from “Berrugas” the last 10 minutes.
Check in to the beach lodge. Lunch and free afternoon to enjoy the beach.
Included meals: Lunch, Dinner

Day 2

Kayac, beach, hike & bioluminescent plankton.
After breakfast we get ready for a tour in Kayacs.
First we will padle around 20 min open sea along the coastline, untill we will find a narrow entrance to the lagoons.
Paddle through the Mangrove until reaching the main lagoon. Here we will observe the fragile and interesting ecosistem within the quit waters while enjoying the natural settings.
Return to the lodge before noon.
Lunch and time to enjoy the beach.
During the hours in the afternoon, there will be a guided tour in the dry forest. Its a very different ecosystem and the guide will show us how the flora has adapted to the very spare precipitation in this area.
Return to the lodge for dinner.

Depending on the time of the month, it is possible to participate in a night tour in order to see the bioluminescent plankton. It’s a kayac tour held in the evening or in the early morning hours, depending on the position of the moon.
If you haven’t had the opportunity to experience bioluminescent plankton yet, it’s a really one-in-a-life-time experience to see how suddenly the water light up in the sark just by any movement within the water.
This tour is not included, but can be organized on the spot with the hosts.
Included meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Day 3

Optional tour to the archipelago of San Bernardo
We recommend a boat trip to the Archipelago of San Bernardo. The tour can be organized directly at the hotel according to availability. Its a very recommended experience with great snorkeling possibilities and some visits to very interesting Caribbean islands. Amongst visits you will visit Santa Cruz del Islote. Its significant population compared with its small size results in its being the most densely populated island on Earth.
Return to the beach lodge in the afternoon.
Included meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Day 4

Sanguaré – Cartagena
Private transfer to Cartagena. During rainy season, you might be sailed 10 min out to “Berrugas” where the transfer will be waiting for you. The tour to Cartagena takes about 3 hours. End of services.

Providencia Island

COL-59 / 4-day Trip

Caribbean Beaches
OVERVIEW

Providencia Island is a wonderfully remote and traditional Caribbean island with breathtaking scenery, gorgeous golden-sand beaches, friendly locals and superb diving. It is located 90km north of San Andrés, near Nicaragua.

Due to its remote location, Providence Island is still a paradise far from the package-holiday crowd. Without a direct connection to the Colombian mainland, the island hasn’t seen nearly the same levels of cultural invasion as San Andrés, leaving its traditions and customs more or less intact. You’ll still hear the local English Creole spoken all over the island, and road signs direct you with the old English names for towns, rather than their Spanish equivalents. All this combined with gorgeous topography standing sentinel over swaths of turquoise-blue sea gives Providencia no small claim to being paradise.

Please be aware, that flights to Providencia have a weight restriction of 10 KG per PAX check-in luggage and 5 KG hand-luggage per PAX. We recommend to store extra luggage in the airport in Bogota or hotel in Cartagena, if returning back.

Important to have in mind that the flight between San Andres and Providencia islands has limited spaces, therefore we advise to book well in advance to secure the places. Also important to make sure the flights from the continent arrive before the last flight to Providencia and allows enough time for the connection.

Guajira Desert

COL-57 / 3-day Trip

COL-57 / Guajira Desert
OVERVIEW

Guajira is the northernmost point of Colombia and South America. It’s a vast swath of barren sea and sand, and home to the indigenous Wayuu people.

Reaching this remote desert peninsula is a real adventure, and the journey will be done in 4×4 jeeps across the desert. The character of the journey is everything between fun and arduous, but when reaching South America’s most northerly point all hardships are easily forgotten, as you will be blown away by the stunning simplicity of it all. Pink flamingoes, mangrove swamps, sand-dune beaches and tiny Wayuu settlements dot the vast emptiness of this most magnificent and little-visited corner of Colombia.

During this 3-day trip we will visit different beaches, small Rancherias where the locals live, the Manaure Salt mine, Cabo la Vela and Punta Gallina. This trip is an adventure trip with basic comforts, but rich in authentic “never-seen-before” experiences.

Despite the very basic infrastructure this trip is planned to be as comfortable as possible. The tour is always done in private services, and you will sleep in the best possible hotels in private rooms with bath. The program is also flexible–weather conditions and special interests of the clients are always taken into account during the planning of the trip.

Day 1 Punta Gallinas
Day 2 Cabo de la Vela
Day 3 Cabo de la Vela – return
ITINERARY
Day 1

Punta Gallina
Pick up at your hotel in Riohacha at 8 am. We will start the journey in 4×4 jeeps heading towards Uribia. From here the journey through the desert begins. During this trip you will appreciate the vast desert landscape, interrupted only by small Wayuu settlements. Lunch in a local rancho, Pusheo, where we will enjoy great food cooked under unusual conditions.

Arrival to Punta Gallina and check in to the hostel. In the afternoon, visit the beach Medano de Taroa and the most northern lighthouse of South America in Punta Gallina.
Back to the hostel where dinner is served. Depending on the local fishing, you may have the option of lobster (has to be ordered some hours before) which is highly recommended.
Included meals: Lunch, Dinner

Day 2

Cabo la Vela
Morning visit to enjoy the beautiful beach of “Punta Aguja”, there is the optional boat ride to Hondita Bay to spot pink flamingos (this tour is not included, but can be ordered the night before). After lunch, departure from Punta Gallina crossing once again La Alta Guajira’s deserts, until the Cerrejon Railroad (Cerrejon is the biggest open sky coal mine in the country), from where the road to Cabo la Vela starts. The last section, is more inhabited that the desert up North, and here lies one of the only windmill parks in the country.
A 2-3 hours desert road trip from Punta Gallinas is what it takes to get down to El Cabo de la Vela, located on the Wester coast of the Guajira peninsula, South from Punta Gallinas. It has a some best beaches, very little visited, only crowded during the Colombian holidays. Otherwise, an idyllic spot to relax and enjoy the nature. The place is great to get lost in the many bays, desert trails and also exploring the local cuisine and traditions. The place is inhabited by the Wayuu indigenous group and it is possible to sea the traditional fishermen work, bringing the sea harvest a shore in the early mornings.
El Cabo is also very popular for those into kite surfing, its permanent wind currents make it ideal for this sport. For those interested, it is possible to take a short course or rent the gear (not included).
Again taking a walk up to “El Cabo” lighthouse to enjoy the sunset, it is a must.
Night in rustic lodge.
Included meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Day 3

Cabo la Vela & Return

Today’s activities depend a lot on the further plans and the interest of the clients. For some, a morning on the beach near Cabo la Vela will do. Others might want to do a visit to Manaure before ending the trip. Manaure is famous for its salt flats and salt production and it’s a interesting visit. Return to Riohacha and end of Guajira tour.
