Colombia’s Volcanoes

COL-37 / 10-day trip International Shared Group Departure / Grade: F

Trek: From El Cedral by the Otun river to the highlands
Climb: Nevado del Tolima (5221 m)

Colombia's Snowcapped Volcanoes

Los Nevados National Park is located in the central Andes range and in the traditional coffee area of Colombia, making it one of the high mountain parks in the country. The protected area covers an area 583 km2 and four states: Caldas, Risaralda, Quindio and Tolima. There are three major snow capped volcanoes: Nevado del Ruiz (5321 m), Nevado del Tolima (5221 m) and Nevado del Santa Isabel (4965 m) and two minor craters: Paramillo del Quindio (4745 m) and El Cisne (4750 m), plus a bunch of high altitude lakes. The treks and climbs are of extraordinary beauty, as many of them passes through the different thermic floors, where it is possible to appreciate the biodiversity that characterizes the country. The ascents are not technically difficult, but the area is known for the long distances to be cover during the daily hikes.

This 10 days program is very interesting as it starts in the mountain cloud forest at 2100 m and slowly ascents to the highlands, experiencing the changes in vegetation, temperatures and landscapes. To conclude this varied trip, we will climb the cone shaped Tolima volcano 5221 m and then hike down to the beautiful Corora valley known for housing Colombia’s national tree: the wax palm. Salento, a beautifully preserved coffee production town, will be the last stop and the place to try the worldwide known Colombian coffee, an unforgettable experience in the heart of Colombia!
