Ausangate Circuit Trek
OVERVIEW

This beautiful five day circular trek takes you around the massif of Nevado Ausangate and over three high passes, two of them over 5,000m. The trek begins in the town of Upis and ends in Pacchanta. The spectacular mountain landscape and unique wildlife make this trek memorable for a lifetime.


Day 1 Cusco – Upis (4450 m)
Day 2 Jatun Puqacocha Lake (4600 m)
Day 3 Suyrucochapampa (4470 m)
Day 4 Pacchanta (4300 m)
Day 5 Back to Cusco
ITINERARY
Day 1

Cusco – Upis (4400 m)
We will leave Cusco at about 9 AM and take a 4-hour ride to Upis. There we will stay the night at a local homestay (4400 m) and enjoy a relaxing afternoon while acclimatizing.

Day 2

Jatun Puqacocha Lake (4600 m)
We hike to the first pass, Arapa pass (4850 m), in the morning, continuing down the valley and past the green lake of Puqa Q’ocha. In the afternoon, we camp at the turquoise Lake Jatun Puqa Q’ocha (4600 m).
Night in tent.
Ascent: 450 m / Descent: 250 m / Highest altitude: 4850 m / Activity duration: 6 h / Distance: 11,5 Km.

Day 3

Suyrucochapampa (4470 m)
In the morning we hike the second pass of Apacheta (4850 m) with the turquoise Laguna Ausangatecocha (4668 m) below. From the lake we climb up again to the Palomani pass (5118 m), the highest point of the trek. Hiking down the next valley for an hour or so brings us to the campsite at Pampacancha.
Night in tent.
Ascent to Apacheta: 250 m / Descent Ausangatecocha: 700 m / Ascent to Palomani: 450 m / Descent Suyrucochapampa: 648 m / Highest altitude: 5118 m / Activity duration: 7 h / Distance: 13 Km.

Day 4

Pacchanta (4300 m)
In the morning we will pass through large boulderfields and the snow-capped peaks of Tres Picos and Puca Punta will come into view. After passing through a small community, the trail continues northwest to the final pass of this trek, the Jampa pass (5071 m). From there we will descend for a few hours to the village of Pacchanta, where we will stay at the home of my “compadres” the Crispin Family. In the evening we can visit thermal baths with beautiful views of Ausangate.
Night in local homestay.
Ascent: 601 m / Descent: 771 m / Highest altitude: 5071 m / Activity duration: 7 h / Disntace: 23,1 Km.

Day 5

Back to Cusco
The last day – we can sleep in as late as we want! After breakfast we will go by car and bus back to Cusco.
