Jampa Peak 5500 m & Ausangate Trek
OVERVIEW

Jampa, also spelled Campa and Qampa, is the easiest, most popular mountain in Cusco and may be climbed without experience in mountaineering. It requires a glacier hike and sometimes a small rock climbing pass depending on the season. The summit offers a panoramic view that reaches all the way to Salkantay over 200km to the NW.

Day 5 Climb: Jampa Peak (5500 m)

ITINERARY
Day 1

Cusco – Upis (4400 m)
We will leave Cusco at about 9 AM and take a 4-hour ride to Upis. There we will stay the night at a local homestay (4400 m) and enjoy a relaxing afternoon while acclimatizing.

Day 2

Jatun Puqacocha Lake (4600 m)
We hike to the first pass, Arapa pass (4850 m), in the morning, continuing down the valley and past the green lake of Puqa Q’ocha. In the afternoon, we camp at the turquoise Lake Jatun Puqa Q’ocha (4600 m).
Night in tent.
Ascent: 450 m / Descent: 250 m / Highest altitude: 4850 m / Activity duration: 6 h / Distance: 11,5 Km.

Day 3

Suyrucochapampa (4470 m)
In the morning we hike the second pass of Apacheta (4850 m) with the turquoise Laguna Ausangatecocha (4668 m) below. From the lake we climb up again to the Palomani pass (5118 m), the highest point of the trek. Hiking down the next valley for an hour or so brings us to the campsite at Pampacancha.
Night in tent.
Ascent to Apacheta: 250 m / Descent Ausangatecocha: 700 m / Ascent to Palomani: 450 m / Descent Suyrucochapampa: 648 m / Highest altitude: 5118 m / Activity duration: 7 h / Distance: 13 Km.

Day 4

Jampa Base Camp (4900 m)
In the morning we will pass through large boulderfields and the snow-capped peaks of Tres Picos and Puca Punta will come into view. After passing through a small community, the trail continues northwest to the final pass of this trek, the Jampa pass (5071 m). Shortly after, the Jampa Base camp will be reached.

Ascent: 601 m / Descent: 200 m / Highest altitude: 5071 m / Activity duration: 5 h / Distance: 8,3 Km.

Day 5

Climb: Jampa Peak 5500 m
We wake up at 3:30am and leave the tent by 4 AM. Arriving at the summit by 7am we can enjoy the views for an hour or so before returning to base camp for breakfast. After breakfast we will walk back to Pacchanta (4300 m) and go to the thermal baths for a couple hours.
Night in local homestay.
Ascent: 600 m / Descent: 1264 m / Highest altitude: 5500 m / Activity duration: 8-10 h / Distance to summit one-way: 1,8 Km. / Distance from BC to Pacchanta: 15 Km.

Day 6

Back to Cusco
The last day – we can sleep in as late as we want! After breakfast we will go by car and bus back to Cusco.
