Caribbean Summits

The Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta, located in the north of Colombia, is the highest coastal mountain range in the world. It is an independent mountain system from the Andes, raising abruptly from the shores of the Caribbean Sea to its glaciated peaks, which lies just 42 kilometers away and reaching a maximum altitude of 5800 meters on Pico Cristóbal Colón; the highest summit in the country.

The entire range covers an area of approximately 17,000 km² and three “departamentos” (political administrative division: states) converged here: Magdalena, La Guajira and Cesar. Due to its location in the tropical belt, it has all the thermal floors, from the warm dry to the snowy peaks. UNESCO declared it a Biosphere Reserve and World Heritage site in 1979; given the network of ecosystems that host countless life forms and also being home to indigenous communities like the Kogis, Arhuacos, Wiwas and Kankuamos. All of them preserving traditions that had survived from pre-Columbian times until the present.

Our Caribbean summits program provides the opportunity to visit a valley of this unique mountain range and experience, not only the fantastic nature, but also to interact with the local communities and their ancient philosophies and way of life. Finalizing the adventure, summiting one of the major peaks and having the privilege to look from a glacier down to the Caribbean coast!
