Pacific Coast

The Pacific coast of Colombia is where the jungle meets the sea, where waterfalls pour out of the dense jungle onto spectacular sand beaches, and where whales and dolphins frolic so close to shore you can admire them from your hammock.

The Choco is extremely biodiverse and nature is well preserved due to the lack of development at all levels. The only civilization you will find here are tiny indigenous villages popping up along the beaches.

The real attraction in Choco is nature, and a stay here is highly recommended especially between July to October, where each year hundreds of humpback whales make the 8,000 km journey from the frigid sea off Chile to the warm waters of Colombia’s Pacific coastline. Here they gather in bays and coves by the dozens or even hundreds to mate and calve their babies before beginning the long trip back.

Pacific Coast 5

El Almejal is an ecotourism project founded in 1982 which offers nature and adventure experiences in one of the most biodiverse places on earth. The lodge is located in El Valle, Bahía Solano on the most picturesque beach of the Pacific Coast of Colombia, 35 minutes from the Utría National Park. It is within the heart of one of the most biodiverse hot spots on the planet: The Choco biodiversity hot spot.

This hot spot includes a wide variety of habitats, ranging from rainforests, mangroves, beaches, rocky shorelines, and coastal wilderness.

The combination of flat coastal plains interspersed with small mountain ranges has fostered the development of unique species, making this one of the most biologically diverse regions of the planet. For example, 25% or 2,750 of the plants found here are found nowhere else.
