Colombia’s Highlights & Beyond
On this trip you will enjoy some of Colombia’s greatest and most iconic natural wonders, while experiencing the colorful cultures that have developed in the different parts of the country.
Each region visited in this trip is very unique, and we will take you from the vibrant cities to small historical towns and then to lovely beaches in the Caribbean.
This roundtrip begins in Bogota and explores the surrounding marvels of the Guatavita Lake and the Salt Cathedral in Zipaquira. We continue our journey in the lush valleys of the iconic coffee region, visiting Salento and the Cocora Valley. Travelers will enjoy a coffee tour in one of the traditional Haciendas of the area.
Afterwards, the move on to Medellin, the “City of the Eternal Spring”, where we will visit the most important places in the city. This part of the trip also includes a visit to Guatape and El Peñol in the surrounding areas.
We then head to the Caribbean, where we will visit some of the country’s best beaches in Tayrona Natural Park and the legendary city of Cartagena.

Due to regulations established by local Indigenous communities, Tayrona National Park will be closed three times a year during the following periods:

Day 1 | Arrival in Bogota Bogotá, the bustling capital of Colombia, is a city where rich history meets vibrant modernity. Nestled high in the Andes at an altitude of 2,640 meters, Bogotá offers a unique blend of cultural experiences, historical landmarks, and a dynamic urban life. The city’s lively atmosphere is complemented by a thriving culinary scene, with a wide array of restaurants offering both traditional Colombian dishes and international cuisine. The vibrant nightlife, with numerous bars, clubs, and live music venues, ensures there’s always something to do after dark. Bogotá’s fusion of tradition and innovation makes it an essential stop for any traveler exploring Colombia. |
Day 2 | Bogota – Full day city tour Afterwards, begin your walking tour in Plaza de Bolívar, the heart of La Candelaria. This spacious plaza is surrounded by some of the city’s most important institutions, including the imposing Primada Cathedral, the neoclassical National Capitol, and the Palace of Justice. Enjoy the grandeur of these buildings and learn about their historical significance. From Plaza de Bolívar, stroll through the cobblestone streets of La Candelaria, lined with colorful colonial buildings adorned with wooden balconies and doors. As you walk, your guide will tell you stories about the neighborhood’s history, from its origins as a colonial settlement to its role in Colombia’s fight for independence. Stop at the Botero Museum, housed in a colonial mansion, to admire the works of Colombia’s most famous artist, Fernando Botero. Marvel at his signature “Boterismo” style, characterized by exaggerated proportions and whimsical themes, as you explore the collection of the master’s paintings, sculptures, and drawings. Finally, end your tour with a visit to the Gold Museum, home to the world’s largest collection of pre-Columbian gold artifacts. Marvel at the elaborate goldsmithing of these ancient treasures, which offer insight into the rich cultural heritage of Colombia’s indigenous peoples. Duration: 6 hours. Day 3 | Guatavita Lake & Zipaquirá’s Salt Cathedral The next stop is a visit to a local restaurant brimming with atmosphere in one of the charming colonial towns nestled in the highlands of Bogota. Here, you will relish a typical, well-prepared Colombian lunch. Afterward, drive to the Salt Cathedral in Zipaquirá, a journey into an underground marvel. Descend into the depths of a salt mine turned cathedral, marveling at the intricate carvings and sculptures crafted entirely from salt. Explore the dimly lit chambers, each with its own religious significance, and learn about the history and cultural significance of this remarkable place. Finally, emerge from the depths with a newfound appreciation for the fusion of nature, faith, and human ingenuity. Return to Bogotá in the late afternoon. IMPORTANT INFORMATION FOR GUATAVITA LAKE:– Guatavita Lake is closed every Monday. If Monday is a public holiday, the site will be closed on Tuesday instead. |
Day 4 | Bogota – Salento – Coffee tour In the afternoon, the group will have a coffee tour at one of the traditional coffee farms in the area. In the coffee tour, visitors have the opportunity to immerse themselves in the fascinating world of Colombian coffee while exploring the farm´s lush coffee plantations. Expert local guides explain the complete production process, from planting the beans to harvesting and roasting. Tourists can also participate in bean picking, learn about different coffee varieties, and enjoy tastings of fresh coffee while taking in the stunning views of Salento’s mountainous landscapes. It’s an educational and sensory experience that allows visitors to appreciate the passion and dedicated work behind every cup of Colombian coffee. |
Day 5 | Salento & Cocora Valley Depending on the fitness level of the group, the local guide will organize the group between those who want to do a shorter version of the hike and those who want to complete the longer option. The hike begins with a gradual ascent through lush cloud forests. Waterproof boots are recommended as the path can be muddy. You will cross several wooden bridges over the Quindío River, adding an adventurous touch to the hike. After a few hours, you will reach the Acaime Nature Reserve, known for its hummingbird sanctuary. The trail then continues uphill towards La Montaña, the most challenging part of the hike with a steep ascent through dense forest. Once at the top, the trail descends through open fields with stunning views of the valley and the iconic wax palms, Colombia’s national tree. The final section of the hike takes you back to the starting point, passing through more scenic landscapes. After exploring the Cocora Valley, return to the picturesque town of Salento, located in the heart of Colombia’s Coffee Region. Stroll through its colorful streets lined with traditional whitewashed houses and adorned with vibrant doors and windows. Immerse yourself in the relaxed atmosphere of this charming town as you visit local craft shops and taste delicious Colombian cuisine at cozy cafés and restaurants. Take some time to wander around the bustling central square of the town, Plaza Bolívar, where you can mingle with the locals, and enjoy a delicious meal at one of the numerous restaurants. A tour of the Cocora Valley and Salento offers an unforgettable combination of natural beauty, cultural heritage, and warm Colombian hospitality, making it one of the highlights of any visit to this beautiful country. Day 6 | Salento – Filandia – Medellin Traditional Basket Weaving Workshop (Optional): The basket weaving workshop “Bejuqueando Ando” offers a unique experiential tourism opportunity, allowing our visitors to explore, interact, and learn about the ancient craft of basketry. This art, rooted in coffee production for over 100 years, has become a tradition and intangible heritage in the department of Quindío. The experience begins with entry to the Bejuco and Basket Interpretation Center, where you’ll have the opportunity to take a guided tour to learn about the history and processes involved in the creation of coffee baskets. Next, you’ll participate in a micro-workshop, giving you the chance to craft your own basket (including materials, supplies, and tools). Road transfer to Medellin (approx. 5-6 hours). This scenic road trip takes you through the heart of Colombia’s coffee region, offering a blend of natural beauty, cultural richness, and delightful experiences. As you approach Medellín, the scenery transitions to urban landscapes with the backdrop of Andean mountains. Known as the “City of Eternal Spring” due to its pleasant climate, Medellín offers a dynamic mix of modernity and tradition. Arrival at El Poblado in Medellín. This is a vibrant neighborhood known for its cosmopolitan atmosphere, trendy cafes, and upscale amenities. Parque Lleras stands out as the heart of its bustling nightlife scene, while green spaces provide tranquil retreats amidst the urban buzz. Visitors can explore cultural attractions, from art galleries to museums, and enjoy convenient access to Medellín’s highlights. With its reputation for safety and hospitality, El Poblado offers travelers an inviting base to discover the best of Colombia’s second-largest city. |

Day 8 | Guatape & El Peñol Guatape is a charming town renowned for its vibrant colors and picturesque streets adorned with intricate zocalos, brightly painted bas-reliefs that depict the region’s history and traditions. Visitors can wander through the cobblestone streets, exploring local artisan shops, cafes, and restaurants offering traditional Colombian cuisine. One of the highlights of a visit to Guatape is ascending the Peñol Boulder, a colossal granite rock formation that rises 200 meters above the surrounding landscape. Embarking on the 740-step staircase carved into the side of the boulder rewards adventurers with awe-inspiring panoramic views of the surrounding lakes, islands, and rolling hills. In addition to its natural wonders, Guatape offers a boat tour on the nearby reservoir allowing visitors to immerse themselves in the region’s stunning scenery. Whether marveling at the vibrant architecture of Guatape or conquering the heights of the Peñol Boulder, a journey to this enchanting destination promises unforgettable experiences and cherished memories. Day 9 | Flight to Santa Marta – Tayrona National Park Tayrona National Park is one of Colombia’s most famous natural parks, featuring some of the most beautiful beaches on the Caribbean coast. Located at the foothills of the Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta, the highest coastal mountain range in the world, the park covers a protected area of 150 km² of land and 30 km² of sea, making it the second most visited park in the country. Thanks to its privileged location, the park is home to a rich biodiversity and also features archaeological ruins such as “Pueblito.” Arrival to the Park around lunch time, check-in and free afternoon to enjoy the beaches. |
Day 10 | Tayrona National Park Guided Tour From the park’s main parking lot there is a hike by the coastline to the Arrecife’s area (1 h), an iconic place within the park. From there, another 25 min to La Piscina beach and 20 min more to El Cabo San Juan. There will be good time to enjoy these idyllic Caribbean beaches and the nature of the place. Lunch will be held at a local place, where they prepare traditional fish. On the afternoon, return back to the lodge. Day 11 | Cacao Tour & Transfer to Cartagena The first experience on this road trip is visiting a local cacao farm, located relatively close to the park. This activity is the result of an initiative by a dedicated group of women, all victims of armed conflict, and cacao farmers in rural Colombia. During this tour, you will not only learn about cacao but also gain insight into how cacao farmers live and work with the fruits that have sustained them for decades. The tour begins with a transfer to the “”San Rafael”” sector. From there, we will walk about 5 minutes to the farm entrance, passing through the “”Stone River.”” A family member from “”Finca La Fortuna”” will welcome us and explain the farm’s history, along with the processes and products derived from cacao. We will start by learning about the types of cacaos grown and the different blends made. We will familiarize ourselves with the fruit, experiencing its smell, touch, and taste. We will visit the plantations and learn about the planting process, harvest times, growth, care, collection, and the final transformation into chocolate, among other important aspects of producing high-quality, 100% organic chocolate. After the tour, we will begin our journey toward Cartagena de Indias. After about an hour, panoramic views of the Caribbean coast begin to appear, with the sparkling sea beside you and mountains in the distance. As you progress, you’ll pass through charming fishing villages, golden sandy beaches, and palm trees swaying in the sea breeze. Continuing southward, the landscape changes as you venture into the coastal lowlands, with vast expanses of mangroves and wetlands bordering the road. Along the way, you may spot local wildlife such as tropical birds and crocodiles that inhabit these unique ecosystems. Finally, you’ll arrive in Cartagena, a city that welcomes you with its impressive colonial architecture, cobblestone streets, and vibrant atmosphere steeped in history. Arrival is expected in the afternoon. |
Day 12 | Cartagena City Tour & City Walk In the morning, meeting with the guide and continue exploring historic Cartagena. Start the tour by visiting the San Felipe Fortress, the most technically advanced military building during Spanish colonial times, then visit the old “Popa” Monastery where you will have a wonderful view of the city. Between these two places, visit the popular marketplace of Bazurto where fruits, vegetables and fish are traded by the locals, most of them descendants of the slaves of the colonial times. Cartagena is perhaps Colombia’s most beautiful and interesting town. It was founded in 1533 and was, during the colonial period, the main Spanish port on the Caribbean coast and primary gateway to South America. In the late afternoon/early evening, walk the old town of Cartagena with a private English-speaking guide. The old part of the city is a declared World Heritage Site, with its maze of cobble alleys, huge balconies, massive churches and charming plazas.
