La Guajira

COL-57 / 4-day Trip

COL 42 Punta Gallinas Guajira JCG
OVERVIEW

La Guajira

This 4-day trip features a 4-Wheel drive over the vast dry deserts of the Guajira peninsula and includes a visit to the northernmost point in South America: Punta Gallinas. In this breath-taking place, the extensive sand dunes meet the Caribbean Sea, a landscape of stunning beauty and contrast.

In this region, indigenous communities like the Wayuu, along with peasant families, share their ancestral knowledge and ways of life, rooted in a deep connection with their environment.

This trip combines adventure and learning, revealing how the traditions of these communities are intertwined with sustainability and spirituality. Visitors will have the unique opportunity for understanding community resource management and the vision of balance with the land that guides the indigenous cultures.

NOTE: The visit to Los Flamencos Flora and Fauna Sanctuary can take place on day 1 or on day 4 according the travelers’ arrival and departure schedule.
NOTE: This trip is available in private or shared services.

ITINERARY
Day 1

Arrival in Riohacha, La Guajira
Arrival at Riohacha and transfer to hotel. Enjoy a relaxing stroll by the seaside promenade, where you can meet Wayuu indigenous people working on their handcrafts. Bask in the spectacular sunset over the Caribbean Sea.
Included meals: None

Day 2

Cabo de la Vela
Morning departure towards Cabo de la Vela. On the way there, stop at the Manaure Salt Flats, where you can learn about the fascinating salt extraction process. Guided by local experts, you’ll understand how this resource has been an essential part of the region’s economy and culture for generations.

Upon reaching the magical Cabo de la Vela, a place where the colors of the sea and sky change constantly, you’ll visit “Playa Arcoiris”, named for the light reflections that paint the water in iridescent hues. This spot boasts impressive rock formations and a unique setting, but is not suitable for swimming due to strong currents and rocks. It’s recommended that you walk carefully and follow the guide’s instructions to avoid accidents.

Next, travelers will hike to “Pilón de Azucar”, a sacred place in the Wayuu worldview. From its summit, you’ll enjoy spectacular views that combine the desert, the sea, and the sky into a single, unforgettable setting. This space is ideal for reflecting and connecting with the spirituality that emanates from the landscape. The next stop will be “Playa Dorada”, where you can take a refreshing dip in its calm waters and enjoy the contrast between the desert and the Caribbean Sea. Afterwards, visit “Playa Tortuga”, also known as “Ojo de Agua Beach,” a serene place where the waves gently caress the sand.

As evening falls, you’ll walk to the iconic Cabo de la Vela Lighthouse, a sacred place for the Wayuu. From here, you’ll contemplate an unforgettable sunset, with the sky painted in intense oranges and reds. This moment will be a pause to reflect on the immensity of the desert and the power of the sea.
Included meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Day 3

Punta Gallinas – The Northernmost Point of South America
Early morning departure towards Punta Gallinas, the northernmost point in South America. The journey through the desert is an experience in itself, with surreal landscapes that will leave you speechless. Upon arrival, you’ll marvel at the majestic Taroa Dunes, where the desert meets the sea. You can walk through the dunes, feel the softness of the sand beneath your feet, and take a refreshing dip in the Caribbean waters.

In the afternoon, participate in a series of activities with the Wayuu community. You’ll learn the art of Wayuu weaving, a tradition that tells stories of their worldview and territory. You’ll also participate in a moving sea turtle release, a gesture of connection and respect for nature. After completing these activities, you can enjoy dinner at your accommodation, sharing experiences with other travelers, before resting under the starry sky.
Included meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Day 4

Cabo de la Vela – Riohacha – Los Flamencos
Morning departure towards Mayapo, a paradise of white sand and turquoise waters, perfect for relaxing after your desert adventure. At this place, you’ll enjoy a seaside lunch, featuring the authentic flavors of Guajira cuisine. After lunch, return to Riohacha.

In the afternoon, visit the village of Camarones, home to the Los Flamencos Wildlife Sanctuary. Here, you’ll board a canoe and explore the Navío Quebrado Lagoon, where hundreds of pink flamingos perform their elegant dance on the water. The silence will only be interrupted by the murmur of the wind and the calls of the birds that inhabit this unique ecosystem.
Included meals: Breakfast, Lunch
