SOUTHERN COLOMBIA
Huila, located in southwestern Colombia, is a diverse and captivating destination for travelers seeking nature, culture, and adventure. The region is best known for the Tatacoa Desert, a surreal landscape of ochre and grey canyons ideal for stargazing and photography. It is also home to the San Agustín Archaeological Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site that preserves mysterious pre-Columbian statues and tombs nestled in lush green hills.
Nearby, in the neighboring department of Cauca, lies Tierradentro, another archaeological treasure with impressive underground tombs and monumental art, offering a profound insight into ancient Andean cultures. Further west, the colonial city of Popayán, known as the “White City” for its elegant whitewashed buildings, is a center of history, architecture, and gastronomy. Just north of Popayán, the Silvia Market is a vibrant hub of Indigenous Misak culture, where travelers can engage with local traditions and crafts in an authentic highland setting.
To the southwest, Cali, Colombia’s salsa capital, adds a dynamic urban touch to the journey. Known for its warm climate and joyful spirit, Cali offers lively music, dance, and a fusion of cultures, making it a vibrant finale to a tour through southern Colombia’s cultural and natural riches.

Day 1 | Neiva – Villavieja – Tatacoa Desert The adventure continues with a scenic road trip to the charming town of Villavieja. From there, embark on a classic tour through the striking Tatacoa Desert, a semi-arid tropical dry forest that stretches over 330 square kilometers. Despite its name, Tatacoa is not a true desert, but rather a tropical dry ecosystem, known for its dramatic eroded formations, deep canyons, and a stunning palette of colors—ranging from ochre and red in the Cuzco area to silvery grays in Los Hoyos. These landscapes are continuously sculpted by wind and rain, creating a dreamlike, almost lunar scenery. Discover the Red Desert, the most iconic area of Tatacoa, famous for its reddish and copper-colored clay formations. This one-day experience includes scenic trails, natural rock sculptures, and eroded terrain—perfect for hiking, photography, and connecting with nature. Highlights of the visit include impressive sites such as the Cardón Viewpoint, the Colorados Trail, the Fossil Cemetery, the Cusco Trail and Labyrinth, the Estoraques, the Faces, the Tower, and the Phallus of the Red Desert, as well as several scenic overlooks that offer breathtaking views of the surrounding landscape. Along the way, we’ll observe the unique flora and fauna that have adapted to this arid environment. The day ends at the Tatacoa Astronomical Observatory, where we’ll enjoy stargazing under one of Colombia’s clearest and most awe-inspiring night skies. |
Day 2 | Villavieja – San Agustín |
Day 3 | San Agustín’s archeological Parks We will begin our visit at San Agustín Park, where more than 500 stone sculptures are scattered across lush green landscapes. These enigmatic figures, some reaching over four meters in height, depict warriors, deities, and mythical beings, showcasing the artistry and spiritual beliefs of the pre-Columbian inhabitants. As we explore, we will learn about the significance of these sculptures and their connection to funerary rites, cosmic beliefs, and the region’s historical importance. In the afternoon, our journey continues with visits to Alto de los Ídolos and Alto de las Piedras, two additional archaeological sites that provide further insight into the cultural and religious practices of the ancient San Agustín civilization. At Alto de los Ídolos, located on the banks of the Magdalena River, we will admire intricately carved tombs and imposing statues, some still featuring traces of the original red, black, and yellow pigments. This site also houses the largest monolithic sarcophagus discovered in the region. Next, we will visit El Estrecho del Río Magdalena, a remarkable natural wonder where Colombia’s longest and most important river narrows to just 2.20 meters in width as it flows through a rocky canyon. This site offers an impressive view of the powerful currents squeezing through the narrowest section of the river, a phenomenon that highlights the dramatic landscapes of the region. As we take in the breathtaking scenery, we will learn about the river’s significance to Colombia’s geography, history, and culture. Finally, at Alto de las Piedras, we will discover more unique sculptures, including one of the most famous figures of San Agustín: El Doble Yo (The Double Self), a striking representation of duality in the ancient belief system. The surrounding landscapes provide a breathtaking backdrop, with rolling hills and dense vegetation enhancing the mystical atmosphere. By the end of the day, we will return to the hotel, having experienced an immersive journey through one of the most enigmatic and historically rich regions of Colombia. Day 6 | Tierradentro – Popayan – Walking city tour The road to Popayán will follow the Inzá route, a scenic mountain drive that showcases the geographic and cultural richness of the region. The journey will take approximately 3 to 4 hours, depending on road conditions. Upon arrival in Popayán, known as the “White City” for its beautifully preserved colonial architecture, a city tour reveals a place steeped in history and tradition. Walking through its cobblestone streets, visitors can admire landmarks such as the Santo Domingo Church, the Puente del Humilladero, the Caldas Park, and the Guillermo Valencia Theater. Popayán’s cultural atmosphere is enriched by its deep-rooted traditions, including its renowned Holy Week processions and its recognition as a UNESCO City of Gastronomy. |
Day 7 | Popayan – Cali (with optional visit to Silvia Marked) Optional visit to SILVIA MARKED: ONLY ON TUESDAYSIf you are lucky to be here a Tuesday, we will make a visit to the Silvia Marked. This is a very authentic market, mainly staffed by the indigenous Guambiano Indians, who live in the nearby areas and have largely maintained their traditional way of life. It is, by no means, touristy and it’s a great opportunity to learn more about the life style in the country site. |
Day 8 | Cali – City Tour – Departure Founded in 1536, Cali has played a significant role in Colombia’s development. It served as a key location during the War of Independence, became a major hub for regional trade, and flourished economically thanks to the sugarcane industry, which transformed both the local economy and the surrounding landscape. During the city tour, visitors will explore the most emblematic landmarks in the historic and cultural heart of Cali. We begin our journey by immersing ourselves in the rhythm of the salsa capital with a visit to the Grupo Niche Monument, a tribute to one of the city’s most iconic musical groups. We then take a pleasant walk along the Bulevar del Río, a lively promenade offering views of the Western Andes and showcasing urban life at its best. Along the way, we will admire architectural landmarks such as La Ermita Church and the historic Puente Ortiz. Our tour continues with a visit to La Merced Church, the very place where Cali was founded in 1536. Steeped in history and symbolism, it represents the city’s colonial roots. Next, we explore the picturesque San Antonio neighborhood, known for its cobblestone streets, artistic atmosphere, and the San Antonio Church, built in 1747. From its hillside location, we enjoy a stunning panoramic view of the city. The route leads us to the iconic Gato del Río sculpture, a beloved city symbol, surrounded by the whimsical figures of the Cat’s Girlfriends Park—a space rich in charm, creativity, and urban legends. We will make a brief stop at La Palabra Cali, a cultural installation honoring the city’s artistic expression, before ending our experience at a local handicraft store, where guests can shop for unique souvenirs and savor a traditional regional snack, full of Valle del Cauca flavor. In the afternoon/evening, departure from Cali. |
