Bogota: Social Challenges and Community Tourism in “Ciudad Bolivar”

COL-07 / 1-day Trip

Ciudad Bolívar has been stigmatized for many decades due to a history of violence in past years. However, with the inauguration of the TransMiCable system in November 2018, this district of Bogotá clearly demonstrates that such stigmas are being left behind. This development represents an important step toward social progress and improved living conditions for its residents.

The Ciudad Bolívar tour is designed to promote community-based tourism as a tool for local development within Bogotá. Through this experience, young residents are trained to share knowledge about their neighborhood, fostering a strong sense of identity and pride. At the same time, the tour challenges and dismantles long-standing misconceptions about Ciudad Bolívar, transforming them into a positive and forward-looking narrative. Visitors will experience the new transportation system that has significantly enhanced quality of life in the area and discover the unique coexistence of urban life and rural landscapes.

This tour combines urban art, memory, local entrepreneurship, landscape, rural life, and experiential activities. The places to visit will be:

  • Ride on the TransMiCable accompanied by community guides.
  • Visit to the Museum of the Self-Built City.
  • Tour of the Mirador de Paraíso viewpoint.
  • Graffiti experience at the viewpoint (guided use of spray paint and basic learning of techniques).

By joining this tour, visitors contribute directly to the local community—through entrance fees and by supporting local businesses
