Cartagena: Fishing experience with local community
COL-05 / 1-day Trip
Each morning, the residents of La Boquilla rise early to engage in fishing — a vital livelihood for many Afro-descendant families in the region. This ancestral practice takes place primarily in two expansive lagoons: the Ciénega de Juan Polo and the Ciénega de la Virgen. These rich waters provide an abundance of species such as bass, tarpon, mojarra, black snapper, lebranche mullet, as well as sea snails, clams, shrimp, crabs, and lobsters.
Our experience begins with a warm welcome from the local fishermen of La Boquilla, who will invite us aboard their traditional canoes. Accompanied by an experienced guide, we will spend approximately 2 to 3 hours navigating the lagoon and participating in artisanal fishing. We recommend bringing a hat, sunscreen, and mosquito repellent for comfort during the excursion.
Fishing enthusiasts will have the unique opportunity to learn traditional techniques, including organizing fishing nets, casting a throw net, and setting traps for shrimp and crabs — all passed down through generations.
Following the fishing experience, we will head to a beachfront restaurant owned by the local fishermen. There, the fresh catch of the day will be prepared and served for lunch in a charming seaside kiosk, offering a delicious and authentic taste of the Caribbean coast.
