Palenque: A Journey into Afro-Colombian Herritage
COL-09 / 1-day Trip
Palenque de San Basilio is a unique and picturesque village located in the Bolívar department, just a short distance from Cartagena de Indias. Founded by African slaves who escaped Spanish colonization in the 16th century, Palenque became the first free town in the Americas and today stands as a symbol of resistance, freedom, and cultural preservation.
Walking through its streets feels like stepping back in time: colorful houses, lush courtyards, and the warmth of its residents reflect centuries of history and tradition. The Palenqueros have kept their identity alive through music, dance, and their language, Palenquero—a fascinating blend of Spanish and African languages passed down through generations.
Palenquero culture is also expressed through its cuisine, festivals, and close connection with nature. During a visit, travelers can participate in music workshops, witness traditional dances, hear stories of resistance and freedom, and experience the hospitality that defines this community, which has managed to preserve its heritage despite the challenges of time.
