Indigenous communities and wildlife

COL-66 / 4-day Trip

Communitarian tourism in the Amazon
OVERVIEW

This Amazon trip proposal emphasizes sustainable practices and deep community involvement. The featured hotel, “La Ceiba,” is owned and operated by members of the indigenous communities, ensuring that tourism directly benefits local families. Most guides are also locals, providing authentic insights while their income supports the surrounding native population.

Beyond supporting a meaningful cause, this tour offers a rare and immersive experience of life within native communities, along with opportunities to observe the Amazon’s vibrant flora and fauna.

Exploring the Amazon River is a breathtaking adventure. Navigating its vast waters, you’ll witness the astonishing life both on and within the river—an unforgettable journey through one of the world’s most awe-inspiring ecosystems.

Travel is possible year-round, as both high-water and low-water seasons offer different but equally valuable experiences. High water lasts from December to mid-June (rainy period), and low water from July to November (drier season). During low water, canoeing and kayaking are replaced by hiking, river beaches, fishing, and similar activities.

  • HIGH WATER (Dec–mid Jun): more rain and mosquitoes, milder temperatures, access to flooded forest.

  • LOW WATER (Jul–Nov): higher temperatures, river beaches and sandbanks, longer embarkation distances, limited access to some lakes and communities.

ITINERARY
Day 1

Arrival to Leticia. Visit to markedplace and Santander Park.
Arrival to Leticia from Bogota.
On arrival, transfer to a comfortable hotel in Leticia.
In the afternoon, a guided walk in Leticia is included. Leticia has long been known for being a shipping point for trading with tropical and aquarium fishes. It is the capital of the Colombian Amazonas region and limits to Brazil and Peru. This unique position makes it an exciting place where the natives from all three countries arrive and trade their products.
The tour includes the hanging houses and a visit to the marketplace and ends up in Santander Park at 17:30. Every day, simultaneously, thousands of screeching perricos (parrots) gather for nightly rest. The sound and sight of the birds are unique and a bit bizarre.
There are also plenty of possibilities to purchase the items during the guided tour before the jungle trip starts the following day.
Included meals: Dinner

Day 2

Exploration of Indigenous Culture, Wildlife Conservation, and Jungle Adventures
Begin your adventure with a hotel pick-up and transfer to the harbor. Around 10 a.m., board a public boat for an Amazon River journey, reaching Mocagua after an approximately 1.5-hour ride. Mocagua lies within the overlapping area of Amacayacu National Natural Park, a gateway to the Amazon’s unique ecosystems.

Arriving at Mocagua, you’ll be welcomed into an indigenous community where life flows at a tranquil, harmonious pace, a refreshing contrast to the hustle of urban areas. Visit a local family and learn traditional techniques for crafting versatile baskets from straw, a skill passed down through generations.

In the afternoon, visit to “Maikuchiga,” a monkey rehabilitation center dedicated to conserving Amazonian biodiversity. The foundation collaborates closely with the local community to protect endangered primates, providing sanctuary to confiscated primates and birds. When possible, they nurture and reintroduce these animals back into their natural environment.

Later in the afternoon, set off on a hike through the high jungle, returning by canoe along the Matamata Creek, which forms the natural boundary of Amacayacu National Park. This scenic journey is subject to weather and water levels, making each experience unique.

Conclude the day with a night hike, a rare opportunity to observe the Amazon’s nocturnal wildlife in its natural habitat.
Included meals: Breakfast, lunch, dinner

Day 3

Exploration of Isla Cacao, Puerto Nariño and Tarapoto Lake
Morning Visit to Isla Cacao: Once part of the Peruvian mainland, Isla Cacao became an island after shifts in the Amazon River’s flow. It is home to the Tikuna and Campas tribes in the small community of San Antonio, where visitors can immerse themselves in the Amazon’s rich biodiversity. This unique location is ideal for observing wildlife such as sloths and diverse bird species. Isla Cacao is also renowned for the Victoria Amazonica, the world’s largest water lily, a captivating sight in the island’s inner lakes.

San Antonio is popular among travelers today, but in the 1990s, it had a very different reputation. The island’s strategic location once attracted drug lords, who built a landing strip here to facilitate their operations. Following the drug wars, this former runway became the community’s main road, and its remnants are still visible.

Continue to Puerto Nariño: Travel by private native boat to Puerto Nariño, where lunch awaits upon arrival. Known as Colombia’s first certified sustainable town, Puerto Nariño embodies environmental stewardship. With no motorized vehicles, it is a tranquil haven dedicated to eco-friendly living, relying on innovative water and energy management to preserve its surroundings.

Stroll through town to admire the intricate sculptures representing Amazonian wildlife and ascend the lookout tower for panoramic views of the Amazon River, Loretoyacu River, shimmering lakes, and the lush tropical rainforest.

Afternoon Visit to Tarapoto Lake: In the afternoon, venture to Tarapoto Lake on a traditional boat. This Ramsar-protected lake ecosystem is renowned for its diverse wildlife, particularly pink and gray river dolphins. Here, you’ll have the chance to witness these incredible creatures and, if you wish, enjoy a refreshing swim alongside them in this serene, natural setting.
Included meals: Breakfast, lunch, dinner

Day 4

Departure
Transfer to the harbour and take the public boat 2 hours back to Leticia where the flight might soon be taking of to Bogota or other destinations.
In case of late departure, a short visit to Tabatinga in Brazil for a Caipirinha is possible.
Included meals: Breakfast
