COL-90 / 4-day Trip

COL RO Guainia CsMavicure JCG 81
OVERVIEW

Cerros de Mavicure & Estrella Fluvial del Inírida

Located in the remote eastern part of Colombia, La Guainía is a hidden gem for adventurous travelers seeking pristine nature and cultural richness. This vast and sparsely populated region is a tapestry of dense Amazonian rainforest, winding rivers, and indigenous communities. One of its most iconic landmarks is the Cerros de Mavicure (Tepuys), three majestic granite monoliths rising dramatically from the jungle, accessible only by boat along the Inírida River. The journey to Mavicure is not just scenic but deeply immersive, offering encounters with local traditions, wildlife sightings, and breathtaking panoramic views from the summit of the hills. Another unforgettable highlight in La Guainía is the visit to the Estrella Fluvial del Inírida: the “River Star” a stunning natural confluence where the Guainía, Atabapo, Inírida, and Orinoco rivers meet. This unique phenomenon creates a vibrant mosaic of waters, cultures, and ecosystems, symbolizing the heart of the Amazon-Orinoco basin. La Guainía invites visitors to experience Colombia’s raw and untouched beauty in one of its most mystical and spiritual settings.

ITINERARY
Day 1

Bogotá – Puerto Inírida – Cerros de Mavicure
Departure from Bogotá for a 1,5 h domestic flight. Upon arrival in Inírida, a small city nestled at the confluence of the Inírida and Guaviare rivers in Colombia’s Amazon-Orinoco region, we will set off towards the majestic cerros of Mavicure, Pájaro, and Mono, sacred granite formations that rise dramatically from the jungle and are part of the Indigenous Reserves of Remanso and Venado. A warm welcome awaits us in the Venado community, where we’ll enjoy a traditional lunch. In the afternoon, we’ll walk along the serene Mavicure creek, passing through enchanting white-sand savannas until reaching a small rocky outcrop known as Cerro Tortuga, the perfect spot to witness a breathtaking sunset over the vast wilderness.
Included meals: Lunch, Dinner

Day 2

Cerro Mavicure & Caño San Joaquín or River dolphins’ Safari
After breakfast, the day begins with the ascent to Cerro Mavicure, one of most accessible of the three granite outcrops known as the Cerros de Mavicure. These hills are part of the ancient Guiana Shield, a geological formation over a billion years old that extends across several countries in northern South America. The hike to the summit takes around 45 to 60 minutes and requires a moderate level of fitness. Local guides accompany the group, providing safety instructions and interpretation of the natural surroundings. The climb is steep in some sections, but there are ladders to assist the ascent. From the top, about 250 meters above the forest floor, visitors enjoy impressive panoramic views of the Guainía region: endless green rainforest, the meandering Inírida River, and the neighboring hills of Pajarito and Mono.

Following this immersive experience, lunch is served, and the group enjoys a refreshing swim at the white-sand river beaches of the Inírida River or Caño San Joaquín. The afternoon continues with a tranquil journey in a curiara, a traditional indigenous canoe, to spot pink river dolphins in the calm waters of the Inírida. The activities will be decided depending on the time of the year and climatic conditions. The day closes with dinner in the Venado community, offering an authentic connection to local culture and nature.
Included meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Day 3

Sweet Route of the Jungle & Estrella Fluvial de Inírida
In the morning, we head toward the Yawarate Nature Reserve, located in the Venado Indigenous Territory, where travelers start the “Sweet Route of the Jungle.” This is a hands-on experience that takes you into the heart of the Amazon rainforest to learn how local communities live in harmony with their environment. Along the trail, guides explain how native plants and trees are used to produce natural sweeteners, especially honey. You’ll taste different types of wild honey and see how indigenous families have developed sustainable beekeeping practices to protect both the bees and the forest.

One of the highlights is a workshop where you’ll get to see the traditional techniques used to care for native stingless bees and collect their honey. These bees are vital for pollination and keeping the jungle healthy. You’ll also learn how the honey is used not just as food, but also in medicine and rituals.

If weather conditions don’t permit the Sweet Route, we’ll take an alternative hike across the white sand savannahs, a rare and beautiful ecosystem. There, you’ll join a local family to learn how they process bitter cassava into an edible staple, using ancestral techniques that have been passed down for generations.

Later, we continue the journey to one of the most important natural landmarks in South America: the Estrella Fluvial de Inírida, or Inírida River Star. This is where four rivers — the Inírida, Guaviare, Atabapo, and the legendary Orinoco meet, forming a spectacular natural crossroads. It’s considered the symbolic birthplace of the Grand Orinoco River, one of the longest rivers on the continent, which flows more than 2,100 kilometers through Colombia and Venezuela. This river network supports a huge variety of wildlife and is essential to many indigenous cultures.

After soaking in the view, we head to the MORU Nature Reserve for lunch. In the afternoon, there’s time for a refreshing swim in the Atabapo River, known for its dark, tea-colored water, rich in tannins from surrounding vegetation. The swim is both relaxing and energizing. Nearby, you’ll visit the Piedra de Maviso, an impressive rock formation that marks the natural border with Venezuela, offering a peaceful and scenic spot to close the day.
Included meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Day 4

Mateven rainforest – Puerto Inírida – Departure
After breakfast, the day unfolds with two exciting options. The first invites us deep into the lush Matavén rainforest to begin an exhilarating canopy adventure. We’ll ascend by high ropes (jummar & rappel) to reach a platform nestled in the treetops, where our journey across hanging bridges begins, suspended 15 meters above the ground and stretching 160 meters through the vibrant northeastern Amazonian forest. Alternatively, for those seeking a more grounded yet immersive experience, we offer a guided walk through the MORU Nature Reserve. This hike provides a closer look at the unique ecosystems of the Matavén jungle in Vichada. Later, we’ll sail back to the city of Puerto Inírida for check-in, before flying back to Bogotá.
Included meals: Breakfast
